Evaluation Conclusions

Diabetes Research Institute Foundation (DRIF) does not meet the following Standard for Charity Accountability.

Standard 19: Cause Related Marketing - Clearly disclose how the charity benefits from the sale of products or services (i.e., cause-related marketing) that state or imply that a charity will benefit from a consumer sale or transaction. Such promotions should disclose, at the point of solicitation: (a) the actual or anticipated portion of the purchase price that will benefit the charity (e.g., 5 cents will be contributed to abc charity for every xyz company product sold), (b) the duration of the campaign (e.g., the month of October), (c) any maximum or guaranteed minimum contribution amount (e.g., up to a maximum of $200,000).

DRIF does not meet this Standard because, in the past year the organization participated in promotions for the sale of consumer goods that indicate that the organization will benefit from these purchases. The promotions, however, did not specify:

  • The actual or anticipated amount of the purchase price that will benefit the organization.
  • The applicable maximum or guaranteed minimum contribution that could/will result from such sales (for example, up to a maximum of $200,000).
Diabetes Research Institute Foundation (DRIF) meets the remaining 19 Standards for Charity Accountability.

Programs

DRIF reports that it has funded patient-based studies, as well as international researcher training, that have resulted in more than 500 islet cell transplants performed worldwide. DRIF has also funded pilot projects undertaken by DRI researchers that make use of the newest advancements in technology to protect transplanted insulin-producing cells, such as encapsulation strategies and implantable biohybrid devices. Other funded research areas include stem cell research, tissue engineering, immune tolerance, regenerative medicine, and nanotechnology, among others, to restore biological insulin production. The funding of these islet and other cell-based research projects has led to the submission of scientific protocols to the FDA in order for this platform therapy to become an accepted and standard procedure for reversing the disease. Together with other diabetes advocacy organizations, DRIF has appeared before Congress to request increased funding for diabetes research, and has made recommendations on the future direction of research appropriations. DRIF also hosts informational workshops for people with diabetes and their families, focusing on the latest advances toward a cure and the newest diabetes management techniques. Through its website, www.diabetesresearch.org, DRIF provides “news you can use” and research updates for those living with diabetes and their family members in the form of e-newsletters, videos, email announcements and information via social media.
