ALA provides services to charter and affiliate Lung Associations such as producing program materials and conducting training and development programs for volunteer and staff leaders nationwide. Furthermore, ALA provides health educational programs and services to support smoking cessation, help prevent lung disease and to assist people with lung disease in better managing their condition. The ALA national headquarters also provides affiliates with epidemiological data and medical and scientific advice and promotes awareness of both the organization and its issues through public service campaigns and media relations. Its public health education programs provide programs and services to prevent lung disease and to help people with lung disease better manage their condition. Program subjects include asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, tuberculosis, influenza, and pneumonia. ALA also supports smoking deterrence programs and programs aimed at preventing occupational lung disease. Research grants are awarded by ALA to researchers investigating the causes and treatments of lung disease and ALA gives sponsors fellowships aimed at steering young scientists into the field of lung research.
