Rare does not meet the following 2 Standards for Charity Accountability.

Standard 14: Budget - Have a board-approved annual budget for its current fiscal year, outlining projected expenses for major program activities, fund raising, and administration.

Rare does not meet this Standard because, when the organization provided budget information, it indicated that the budget:

  • Did not identify total projected program service expenses.
  • Did not identify total projected fund raising expenses.
  • Did not identify total projected administrative expenses.

Standard 16: Annual Report - Have an annual report available to all, on request, that includes: (a) the organization's mission statement, (b) a summary of the past year's program service accomplishments, (c) a roster of the officers and members of the board of directors, (d) financial information that includes (i) total income in the past fiscal year, (ii) expenses in the same program, fund raising and administrative categories as in the financial statements, and (iii) ending net assets.

Rare does not meet this standard because:

  • The organization indicated that it does not produce an annual report.
In addition, the BBB Wise Giving Alliance requested but did not receive complete information on the organization’s governance and oversight, effectiveness measures, and fundraising disclosures and is unable to verify the organization's compliance with the following 3Standards for Charity Accountability: 3, 7, and 19.

Programs

              

Rare is a global grassroots organization that trains and mentors local conservation leaders through the use of outreach tools. The organization supports local leaders as they customize these tools and identify motivations and messages to inspire environmental protection in their own communities. Rare reports it specializes in social marketing, a method for changing attitudes and behaviors and attempts to change people’s attitude and behavior toward conservation at the local level. The organization and its partners work in more than 50 countries, and state that they are committed to designing conservation programs that benefit both people and nature in order to ensure that change is embraced and sustained.
