Programs

NPT’s land conservation programs aim to preserve, protect and enhance the nation's system of parks at the local, state and national level through the identification of key land acquisition needs and opportunities. NPT reports that it has worked on over 200 land conservation projects and currently has land conservation projects in more than 20 states and U.S. territories. The organization has public education programs to educate and raise the profile of local, state and national parks and their needs with the public, park agencies and congressional delegates. Furthermore, NPT’s public education mission is to provide recreational and educational parkland opportunities for current and future generations. In 2008, NPT launched the Youth to Parks program, an environmental education program focused on connecting children to the outdoors and nature. This grassroots program features the organization’s newly established school pilot program “Where’s Buddy Bison Been?” The program encourages children and their families to get outside, enjoy a park and then share their American park experience. The program is currently being piloted in more than 20 education centers across the country where educators use Buddy Bison (a fuzzy, brown plush toy) and toolkits created by NPT to enhance their science, history, geography, writing, reading and community service programs. Another aspect of the Where’s Buddy Bison Been? program is that it enables students of limited resources to have their first American park experience. Through the Buddy Bison program, students are introduced to the natural environment, and are also exposed to academic and professional opportunities.

For the fiscal year ended June 30, 2010, NPT's program expenses were:

Land conservation 292,994
