Evaluation Conclusions

              

Alaska Wilderness League (AWL) does not meet the following 2 Standards for Charity Accountability.

Standard 6: Board Policy on Effectiveness - Have a board policy of assessing, no less than every two years, the organization's performance and effectiveness and of determining future actions required to achieve its mission.

AWL does not meet this Standard because:

  • The board of directors does not have a written policy stating that, at least every two years, an appraisal be done assessing the organization’s performance and effectiveness and determining future actions required to achieve its mission.

Standard 7: Board Approval of Written Report on Effectiveness - Submit to the organization's governing body, for its approval, a written report that outlines the results of the aforementioned performance and effectiveness assessment and recommendations for future actions.

AWL does not meet this Standard because:

  • It has not completed an effectiveness assessment in the past two years.
AWL meets the remaining 18 Standards for Charity Accountability.

Programs

              

AWL provides information to its members on legislation concerning the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and other wilderness-quality lands in Alaska, including the state’s rainforests and oceans. AWL also tracks the status of bills that deal with transportation and energy development issues relating to Alaska. Along with recruiting and training activists, AWL also organizes slideshow presentations about the Arctic Wildlife Refuge and the impact of drilling by the oil industry on the area. AWL allocates resources among the following programs: Arctic (Arctic National Wildlife Refuge), BLM (Bureau of Land Management), Forests (Tongass and Chugach National Forests), Western Arctic (National Petroleum Reserve-Alaska), Oceans (Chukchi and Beaufort Seas), and Arctic Environmental Justice.
