Programs

The Foundation administers grants received from federal agencies and private organizations. The two largest are the senior community service employment program (SCSEP) with the Department of Labor, which provides temporary subsidized employment for persons 55 and older whose incomes are at or below 125% of federal poverty levels, and the partially IRS funded tax counseling for the elderly (Tax-Aide), which supplies volunteer assistance for federal income tax preparation to low and moderate income older individuals with special attention to filers who are 60 and over. The Foundation also represents older Americans in high visibility cases and prepares friend of the court briefs on legal and policy issues such as consumer fraud, access to justice, health and long-term care, age and disability discrimination, and pension and other employee benefits. Through its consumer fraud project, older consumers are alerted to telemarketing and other types of fraud that endanger their financial security. The Foundation is also a source of consumer information on reverse mortgages and other alternatives that help people remain in their homes.
