Programs

Through ABTA's research and grant program, new and early career scientists are encouraged to enter and remain in the field of brain tumor research. The program also helps to promote information exchanges between scientists, clinicians, and other healthcare professionals. In 2011-2012, ABTA plans to support 26 research fellows, 2 translational grants, 12 discovery grants, 15 medical student summer fellowships, and several collaborative research opportunities across the United States and Canada. The organization’s Helpline supports families coping with a brain tumor diagnosis. The Helpline provides information to brain tumor patients, families, and care partners. Individualized telephone consultation is also provided by Master's level clinicians who provide guidance through diagnosis, treatment, and palliative care. Furthermore, ABTA provides TrialConnect™ in partnership with Emerging Med and it reports that the service is free and personalized and that it matches a patient’s brain tumor type and treatment history with an appropriate clinical trial. For those who qualify to participate, clinical trial volunteers gain access to new research treatments before they are widely available, play an active role in their own health care, and obtain medical care at health care facilities during the trial. TrialConnect™ helps patients who want to help others by contributing to brain tumor-related medical research and new technologies.

For the fiscal year ended June 30, 2010, ABTA's program expenses were:

Research programs 2,638,057
Patient services 404,232
