JBI provides people who are blind, visually impaired or reading disabled with the books, magazines, and special publications in Braille, large print and audio formats that enable them to maintain their connection to the educational, literary and cultural life of their communities. JBI "Talking Books" are available in English, Russian, Spanish, Yiddish, Hebrew, Hungarian, Romanian and Polish.
JBI’s collection includes poetry, fiction, history, biography, short stories, humor, psychology and self help, Jewish studies, memoirs, cookbooks, mysteries, periodicals, liturgical materials and more. The JBI Library allows blind, visually impaired and reading disabled children to receive a Jewish education alongside their sighted peers; it keeps the elderly, many of who are coping with sudden vision loss, connected to the world of ideas and the joy of “reading.”
The JBI Low Vision Clinic at the Sourasky Medical Center in Tel Aviv treats the visually impaired with optometric devices and also offers a special mobile screening service to reach the homebound elderly who cannot, on their own, come to the clinic for diagnosis and treatment.
Other activities include outreach and library services to the blind and visually impaired of the Former Soviet Union, Eastern Europe, Israel and around the world.
