Programs

GRF provides education and support for those with glaucoma, their families and friends. The organization’s website has a range of information and news for glaucoma patients and their families. GRF provides educational brochures and an informative booklet, “Understanding and Living with Glaucoma.” GRF also provides an 800 number answered by an experienced information specialist who provides support and assistance. The organization produces a free newsletter, “Gleams,” that provides the latest information about glaucoma treatments and research. GRF has funded such grants as the Collaborative Normal Tension Glaucoma Study, the first controlled clinical trial to establish that lowering eye pressure preserves vision. Another research grant identified one of the first genes responsible for glaucoma. There is a major collaborative study in its sixth year, Catalyst For a Cure (CFC), which is redefining how glaucoma research is conducted in order to speed the process of discovery to find a cure. The CFC research scientists, specialists in genetics, nerve regeneration, and neurodevelopment, are working in real-time collaboration to understand neuronal loss in glaucoma and identify targets for intervention.
