Red Cloud Indian School (Red Cloud) does not meet the following Standard for Charity Accountability.

Standard 8: Program Service Expense Ratio - Spend at least 65% of its total expenses on program activities.

Red Cloud does not meet this Standard because:

  • According to the its audited financial statements for the fiscal year ended June 30, 2009, the organization spent $7,774,406 or 63% of its total expenses ($12,337,085) on program service activities.

Programs

              

Red Cloud consists of two elementary schools and one college preparatory high school serving Lakota boys and girls. At its main campus at Holy Rosary Mission in Pine Ridge, South Dakota, Red Cloud operates a Lakota Catholic school system that includes an elementary school (grades K-8) and a college preparatory high school. Red Cloud operates a second elementary school (grades K-8) at Our Lady of Lourdes. In addition to the South Dakota state required curricula, Red Cloud teaches courses in Lakota history, language, culture and spirituality. Red Cloud also coordinates the development efforts of community-based parish outreach programs on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. Trained staff and community volunteers lead gatherings and celebrations to focus on cultural traditions and customs. In addition, the organization helps identify the needs of the community in an effort to provide programs and opportunities to serve children and their families. Three times per year, Red Cloud publishes a newsletter, the "Red Cloud Country." The Heritage Center located on the main campus showcases the art and native craft of Native American artists. The Heritage Center sponsors an annual juried Art Show showcasing the work of Native American artists from across the country. The organization provides direct assistance to families through its emergency pastoral fund and its parishes which serve the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation.
