Programs

              

AAIA’s programs focus on areas such as youth/education and preservation of tribal cultures and communities. The organization reports awarding an average of 100 scholarships annually through 8 different scholarship programs. Through its Indian child welfare program, AAIA conducts legislative advocacy as well as training and education. AAIA annually awards grants to Indian-run summer camps across the country with a focus on cultural and language preservation and/or diabetes prevention education. Furthermore, its Dakotah language preservation program has created materials for youths, including books, CDs and Dakotah-language SCRABBLE, as well as a complete K-2 curriculum, and sponsored events and created programs for youths and families such as the Family Dakotah Language Learning Center. AAIA also strives to protect sacred places such as the Bighorn Medicine Wheel/Medicine Mountain in Wyoming by providing legal assistance. The organization also works to achieve federal recognition for unrecognized tribes such as the Piro/Manso/Tiwa Tribe of New Mexico.
