Programs

AAIA’s programs focus on areas such as youth/education and preservation of tribal cultures and communities. The organization reports that through its youth/education program in 2011, it awarded more than 100 scholarships and that its summer camp grant program also provided seed grants to 13 summer camps. Furthermore, its youth/education program provides advocacy and training programs dealing with Indian child welfare and juvenile justice issues as well as a Native language preservation program which has created numerous materials for youths, including an educational video game, books, CDs, Dakotah-language SCRABBLE, and a complete K-12 curriculum. In the area of preservation of tribal cultures and communities, AAIA works to protect sacred places through legal advocacy (such as the Bighorn Medicine Wheel/Medicine Mountain in Wyoming which was recently designated as a National Historic Landmark for its traditional cultural value) and to promote the repatriation of human remains and cultural items, both domestically and internationally. The organization also works to achieve federal recognition for unrecognized tribes such as the Piro/Manso/Tiwa Tribe of New Mexico.
