Programs

KIPVAs primary activities include advocacy, research, sports and recreation, education, and communication programs. These programs are focused primarily on KIPVA members, qualified veterans, and provide opportunities for other persons with disabilities and interested associates to join in the organization's efforts. KIPVA is headquartered in Louisville, Kentucky and its service area covers the states of Kentucky and Indiana. KIPVA's team closely follows the activities in the Indianapolis, Louisville, and Lexington Veterans Administration Medical Center (VAMC) Spinal Cord Injury Clinics. Each year, the organization assesses and addresses the specific needs in each of these VAMCs. KIPVA is also an advocate within each state’s legislature for improved veterans’ benefits and support of civil rights of those with disabilities. The organization works with Congressional members, staffs and committees to ensure maximum independence and opportunity, and promote complete barrier removal and protection of legal rights. KIPVA's sports and recreation program promotes active lifestyles by providing accessible opportunities to participate in sporting events. The program provides tangible health benefits, support, and camaraderie for all involved. KIPVA provides grants to its members and associate members to participate in recreational programs on a national level. Paralyzed Veterans of America is one of the largest private supporters of spinal cord research in the U.S. Some areas of investigation are: medical and clinical care; psychological adjustment; technology and devices; and basic research toward a cure for spinal cord injury. The chapter provides financial support for these programs and to our university communities that conduct research in these areas. Our communication and education program includes an active website with links to resources and news. KIPVA also produces a monthly newsletter along with several publications on self care for persons with spinal cord dysfunction. The organization seeks opportunities to collaborate with local disability organizations to ensure that constituents are informed about national and local disability issues
