Programs

Special Olympics Kentucky provides year-round sports training and competition in 16 Olympic-type sports for 6,000 children and adults with intellectual disabilities in Kentucky. The sports training program offers individual and team sports as well as Unified Sports, a mentoring component that pairs individuals with and without disabilities in sports such as golf, bowling and track and field and allows them to train and compete side by side. In addition to the sports programming available, Special Olympics Kentucky also offers several other programs that serve individuals with intellectual disabilities. The Healthy Athlete program offers free medical screenings and appropriate referrals for children and adults several times a year throughout the State. Special Olympics Kentucky also offers an Athlete Leadership program which provides public speaking training as well as social and leadership skills to further promote and advance Special Olympic Athletes in the community. Special Olympics Kentucky has also partnered with school systems across Kentucky to promote Project Unify, a mentoring program for current and future athletes as well as their peers at school. This program is promoting social change in how individuals with intellectual disabilities are treated and valued in the community. Lastly, a new addition to Special Olympics Kentucky, the Young Athlete Program, is an innovative sports program that allows children ages two to seven to receive an introduction to sports. This program also benefits the families of these young children by providing an appreciation for fitness and sport and allowing these families to see the potential in their child.
