Programs

              

The Epilepsy Foundation of Kentuckiana's services and programs include the following: Advocacy--The Epilepsy Foundation of Kentuckiana advocates for individuals with epilepsy in many different capacities. At a local level, the Foundation fights for the rights of people who have been discriminated against in housing, employment, the receipt of appropriate services and treatment, and in education. At state and national levels, the Foundation encourages legislators to increase funding for research and services that improve the quality of life for individuals with epilepsy. Educational Programs and In-service Training--The Foundation provides training for school personnel, the medical community, and the business community to teach people how to correctly respond to seizures. These in-service trainings are also designed to provide people with a basic understanding of epilepsy. Public Education--The Foundation is active in the community providing information to the general public by distributing literature and providing information at health and community fairs. H.O.P.E. Presentations (Helping Other People with Epilepsy)--HOPE presentations are designed to address a variety of topics relating to epilepsy and are easily modified for presentations at civic clubs, in school classrooms, or at staff meetings. Support Services--From phone trees to meetings, the Epilepsy Foundation of Kentuckiana has support services to meet the community's needs. Support is available for people with epilepsy, their loved ones, and the people who care for them. The Epilepsy Foundation of Kentuckiana offers a phone tree, e-mail network, group meetings, social events, and educational seminars for both adults and teens. Information and Referral--Information is available on all topics related to epilepsy. The Foundation provides information for the general public, newly diagnosed people with epilepsy and their families, and health care professionals. The Foundation also provides referrals to doctors and related service providers. A quarterly newsletter, The Illuminator, is available for anyone who wants to keep up on epilepsy related issues and the Foundation's services. Financial Assistance--The Epilepsy Foundation of Kentuckiana can provide financial support to individuals with epilepsy and their families. In extreme cases, where all resources have been exhausted, the Foundation can provide assistance with the costs of medications, treatment, or other special and necessary needs. The Foundation also sponsors the annual Shannon O' Daniel Memorial Scholarship for college bound high school seniors and also pays for a number of enrollment fees so that children with epilepsy can enjoy a special camp designed just for them.
