The Houston BBB requested but did not receive complete information on the organization’s effectiveness measures and finances and is unable to verify the organization's compliance with the following 2Standards for Charity Accountability: 7 and 14.
Council on Alcohol and Drugs Houston meets the remaining 17 Standards for Charity Accountability. Please note that as of the date of this report 1 out of the 20Standards for Charity Accountability are not currently effective. As a result, this standard has not been applied to this evaluation.

Programs

              

The Council on Alcohol and Drugs- Houston provides the following programs and services to the community: Assessment includes confidential evaluation, intervention, and counseling for individuals and families. Case management services focus on sobriety, parenting skills, and resources to enable success in abstaining from alcohol and drug use. During 2008-2009, 64,945 people were evaluated and counseled. Prevention promotes a community awareness of the dangerous effects and often fatal consequences of chemical dependency on alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs. The Council provides life skills training in elementary and middle schools and in activities at summer camps. This training is targeted to decrease the risk factors for substance abuse. Prevention includes intervention with youth who have indicated increased risk behaviors for substance abuse to interrupt behavior which may lead to substance use. During 2008-2009, 4,446 youth were served. Clinical Services include assessment, evaluation, and counseling with educational and intensive group interaction, to provide follow-up care for those in need of additional resources to manage their recovery from alcohol and drug use. The Council also has a pediatric clinic that offers medical care to substance-exposed infants and children and their families. The Council provided clinical services to 1,240 people during 2008-2009. Education includes voluntary and mandated classes on alcohol, tobacco and other drugs available to the public as well as classes for the counseling profession. The Council reaches out to the business community to teach the skills to identify alcohol and substance abuse and to provide workplace policies to respond to substance use.
