Programs

Young Women's Christian Organization of Houston (YWCA) serves the community through the following programs: SENIOR PROGRAM: This service is a nutrition-based, mainly HCAAA funded program that addresses the basic needs of senior citizens by offering human interaction, camaraderie, physical activity, and healthy meals. Senior Service programs and activities include a nationally accredited Nutrition Program that feeds 1,500 citizens daily either at congregate sites around the city of Houston or by home delivery to low income and immobile clients. CHILDREN'S PROGRAM: The YWCA strives to support the developmental, social, and educational needs of our most valued resource, children. We currently offer child care at five locations throughout Houston. The child care offered at two high schools in the Fifth Ward and two Houston Community College sites provides an opportunity for teen parents to continue their education without prohibitive costs. TEEN PROGRAM: This program meets the needs of the community through evidence-based prevention and intervention programs that offer training and support for a successful transition from pre-teen to young adult. Services include HIP-HOP (a federally funded health initiative program), STD/HIV awareness, substance abuse, education that empowers middle school and high school students, and Making Proud Choices which is designed to reduce the risks of STD, HIV and pregnancy. ADULT PROGRAM: Three services empower women seeking skills that promote a life of self-sufficiency and sustainablility: WILD, She Can and Confidence for Women. WILD, Women Independently Living and Developing, is a residential program of support and training for women aging out of foster care. She Can offers practical, hands-on information about home repairs, plumbing, electrical repairs, HVAC, car repairs, painting and negotiating with contractors, which enables women to become self-sufficient heads of households. Confidence for Women is a course designed to help women learn and accept responsibility through education in health and wellness, economic empowerment, self-image, employability skills and community citizenship. Today over 2,776 families are served through programs offered by YWCA of Houston.
