Programs

              

The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, Texas Gulf Chapter provides the following programs and services: Patient and Community Services, Public Health Information, and Professional Education. Patient and Community Services: Offered financial assistance to local patients for drugs, laboratory services related to processing, typing, screening and cross-matching blood components for transfusion and transportation to and from treatment. Provided information and counseling services to patients and their families. The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society also worked on a day-to-day basis with county welfare departments, clinics, nursing homes, and social services departments of area hospitals and other agencies collecting information on their services for patients and the availability of blood components for transfusion. In addition, they handled requests for assistance through the resources and referral information compiled and maintained by the chapter. Public Health Information: Handled requests for material and information. Distributed pamphlets concerning blood-related cancers and early diagnosis during our door-to-door campaign. Educated the public to the dangers of these cancers and advances in treatment through speeches and audio-visual presentations to various groups. Professional Education: Distributed literature to the medical community to advise them of progress in research and the latest developments in the treatment of blood-related cancers. The organization also held programs and seminars for medical professions to educate them in new procedures. In 2009, LLS chapters offered 516 family support groups across the U.S. and Canada, 7,000 First Connection matches occurred matching newly diagnosed patients with trained volunteers, and nearly 3,000 school personnel, healthcare professionals and parents attended the LLS education program “Welcome Back: Facilitating the School Experience for Childhood Cancer Survivors.” Also, in 2009, the LLS co-pay assistance program awarded over $19.2 million in support to patients to assist them with prescription drug co-pay and insurance premium obligations.
