Programs

The Katy Prairie Conservancy (KPC) was established to conserve the Katy Prairie for the benefit of its wildlife and Texans. Currently, thousands of acres are preserved as a wildlife habitat and natural areas with a goal to save significantly more acreage in the future. KPC has increased protected lands to 17,500 acres, began a conservation buyer program, and worked with owners of small tracts regarding possible donation. KPC also removed invasive species on more than 600 acres of preserve lands, constructed 300 acres of wetlands through the Texas Prairie Wetlands Program, and planted native grasses on 50 acres of KPC's Nelson Farms Preserve and the Warren Ranch. KPC is also involved with various research projects conducted by graduate students from Rice University and Texas A & M University, and combined with Harris County Department of Education, they developed and implemented an after-school program on the science of the prairie for elementary and middle schools in Waller, Cy-Fair, Houston, and Aldine Independent School Districts. In 2009, they hosted more than 70 public events on the prairie.
