Programs

              

Sanctuaries: Houston Audubon Society owns and manages 17 nature sanctuaries in the Gulf Coast area, providing nearly 4,000 acres of habitat for birds and wildlife. An estimated 30,000 people visit these sanctuaries annually to bird watch and to spend time in nature. HAS works to eradicate invasive non-native vegetation on its properties and to provide plentiful food sources and productive habitat for birds. Education & Outreach: Houston Audubon Society’s education department presents innovative natural science programs to nearly 25,000 children and adults annually. HAS offers outdoor nature experiences as well as nature camps, birding classes, outreach programs and field trips. HAS also sponsors monthly membership meetings featuring notable speakers and publishes both a bi-monthly newsletter and a website which cover topics of interest to birders and naturalists. Advocacy: Houston Audubon Society advocates for birds and wildlife habitat in several important ways. The organization supports varied projects that protect vital wildlife habitat through partnerships with state and federal agencies and other nonprofit organizations. HAS sponsors local and international birding festivals, workshops, and conferences to promote awareness of our finite natural resources. HAS also educates its membership and other interested parties about issues critical to bird and land conservation. Each year, Houston Audubon is a strong voice for environmental accountability in the Gulf Coast region.
