Stated Purpose: The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo™ was organized for charitable, educational and scientific purposes to encourage and promote the breeding, raising and marketing of better livestock and farm products at public fairs and to promote and maintain research and educational functions within the livestock industry. It is the general policy of the Show to utilize, in the fiscal year subsequent to which it is earned, the excess of its revenue over expenses for the furtherance of its exempt purpose, including the granting and/or funding of scholarships, educational endowments, agricultural research projects and other similar programs and the funding of related capital additions and improvements. The funds of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo are used exclusively to meet necessary expenses for its upkeep and operation and in furtherance of the exempt purpose of the organization.

Programs

              

To fulfill its mission of encouraging and promoting the breeding, raising and marketing of better livestock and farm products, the organization hosts a Rodeo Show that both supports the livestock industry and encourages Texas youth to take advantage of the great opportunities the livestock industry offers. There are open show breed competitions, junior livestock shows for Texas youth to participate in and junior contests such as judging contests, agricultural mechanics, and tractor technicians. The Show has educational exhibits and attractions where visitors can learn about different aspects of agriculture and livestock. Visitors can end their day with a real western rodeo in the stadium followed by musical entertainment. In 2011, Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo entertained 2,262,834 visitors fro general attendance (for all activities on the grounds). In 2011, 562 students received over $9 million in scholarships for use at Texas colleges and universities.Each year, nearly 330,000 students are impacted by the Show’s competitions, scholarships and exhibits. More than $5 million in premiums and awards were paid to junior show exhibitors participating in the 2011 Show.
