Programs

The Orange Show Center for Visionary Art (OSCVA) is a non-profit organization that preserves visionary art environments, provides opportunities for the expression of personal artistic vision, and creates a community where that expression is valued. Programs include: · Preservation of The Orange Show monument. From 1956 until his death in 1980, Jeff McKissack single-handedly created The Orange Show. The OSCVA opened the site to the public in 1982 and it has since become a community gathering place. · Preservation of The Beer Can House. Over an eighteen year period, from 1970 to 1988, John Milkovisch transformed his home into a monument to his favorite beverage. He covered the entire house with flattened beer cans, hung beer can curtains from eaves and paved his yard with marbles, rocks and other decorative items. The OSCVA acquired the property in 2001 and, after extensive restoration, opened it to the public in 2008. · Production of the Houston Art Car Parade. In 1988, the OSCVA created a parade of art cars which has grown into the largest art car gathering in the world. It has become one of Houston’s signature events, drawing over 250 entries and attracting a quarter million spectators to the streets of downtown Houston. · Eyeopener Tours that uncover cultural treasures in Houston and throughout the U.S. and Mexico. · Community murals that help make our city a more colorful place. · Concerts and special events at The Orange Show, which provides an environment for performances and hands-on workshops.
