Evaluation Conclusions

              

Mercy Neighborhood Ministries, Inc. does not meet the following Standard for Charity Accountability.

Standard 11: Financial Statements - Make available to all, on request, complete annual financial statements prepared in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles. When total annual gross income exceeds $250,000, these statements should be audited in accordance with generally accepted auditing standards. For charities whose annual gross income is less than $250,000, a review by a certified public accountant is sufficient to meet this standard. For charities whose annual gross income is less than $100,000, an internally produced, complete financial statement is sufficient to meet this standard.

Despite gross revenues of $1,247,206 for the year ended December 31, 2009, the organization did not obtain an audit of its financial statements by an independent certified public accountant (CPA).

Programs

              

Homecare Services provides ongoing training, employment, and retention support for women who are striving to attain self-sufficiency by working as homecare aides. These women then provide home healthcare to older adults living in inner-city neighborhoods, who may suffer from poverty, infirmity, and loneliness. According to the charity, in 2009, 22 women were employed through this service with 90% retaining employment for the entire year. From these services provided by the homecare aides, 155 elderly and/or disabled clients received homecare assistance in 2009.

Adult Education and Supportive Services provides education offering, which include computer literacy, computer job training, GED classes, Adult Basic Learning Education (ABLE) classes, and programs that develop job readiness skills. In addition, the charity is able to provide clients assistance in attaining birth certificates, state identification cards, and background checks.  Clients may also receive assistance with food, rent, and utility.

Senior Services provides spiritual care, visitation and counseling, transportation services, food and clothing, and recreational and cultural activities for seniors in the community. The charity connects seniors with medical and legal services and helps them fill out forms for financial assistance, medical claims, social security, food stamps, and housing applications. According to the charity, in 2009, 200 seniors received regular holistic care and assistance that enabled them to maintain their independence and/or improve their quality of care.
