Programs

Power Inspires Progress provides paid on-the-job tailored for inner city residents, helps individuals overcome obstacles to pursuing and maintaining employment, supports employment education with tutoring to meet trainee’s career goals, and connects employers and work-ready employees. Individuals who participate in the program can work up to one year, four hours a day in the charity’s catering and pizza parlor operations. During the work day, trainees practice teamwork, problem solving, customer service, cash handling, and cooking and cleaning. Trainees learn to come to work each day on time and ready to work, and to plan their outside commitments around their work schedule. Each trainee also has an educational goal and works with volunteer tutors for 45-minute sessions during the work day. The education sessions may focus on basic math and reading, GED preparation, computer skills, or college assignments. Monthly group trainings have outside speakers come in and talk about life and work skills, such as stress management, lead paint hazards, customer service, banking and credit, and nutrition. In addition, the charity brings in volunteers for mock interviews and to teach resume writing and job hunt skills. Power Inspires Progress cooperates with other local organizations to help trainees overcome barriers such as housing, healthcare, childcare, and transportation.

For the fiscal year ended December 31, 2009, Power Inspires Progress' program expenses were:
