Programs

ProKids has four programs that serve children who have been abused and neglected. The four programs are as follows: CASA University - A year-round volunteer training program, with a flexible schedule to allow potential CASAs to start immediately and complete the training within six months, taking classes in any order. CASAs are provided with a comprehensive 300-page training manual, which corresponds to 15 two-hour training classes. Building Blocks - This is a specialized program designed to provide abused and neglected children from birth to age five with a CASA who has advanced training about the specific needs of this age group. These CASAs receive 10 hours of additional training to assess physical and developmental milestones, caregiver-infant contact, and environmental stimulation and suitability. Building Blocks CASAs visit the children assigned to them at least twice a month. Steps to Peace (SToP) - Research and field-testing helps address the needs of children who either witness and/or experience domestic violence. The Steps to Peace Program trains CASAs to recognize signs of domestic violence and provides knowledge about the community-based resources available to address the effects of domestic violence on children. Launch - This program provides support services to youth 14 years of age and up who age out of the foster care system without ever having found a permanent home. CASA volunteers who are interested in working with these youth participate in 12 hours of additional training to gain an understanding of the special needs of this population and to help them transition to adulthood. Working in partnership with older youth, ProKids CASA volunteers and staff focus on housing, education, employment, and the acquisition of basis life skills, such as knowing how to set up a bank account and to apply for a job. Litigation Support Team - members provide legal representation and counsel to the CASAs serving ProKids’ children. In addition, the two staff attorneys also mentor volunteer lawyers, provide legal training, perform legal research, and supervise law student interns.
