Evaluation Conclusions

              

Mathis Foundation for Children does not meet the following Standard for Charity Accountability.

Standard 11: Financial Statements - Make available to all, on request, complete annual financial statements prepared in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles. When total annual gross income exceeds $250,000, these statements should be audited in accordance with generally accepted auditing standards. For charities whose annual gross income is less than $250,000, a review by a certified public accountant is sufficient to meet this standard. For charities whose annual gross income is less than $100,000, an internally produced, complete financial statement is sufficient to meet this standard.

Despite gross revenues of $307,704 for the year ended December 31, 2009, the charity did not obtain an audit of its financial statements by an independent certified public accountant (CPA).

Programs

              

The Mathis Foundation for Children Programs serves children and youth who have been placed in out-of-home care by the Juvenile Courts. The Mentor Program provides mentors to children and youth. Mentors are interviewed and selected, and are provided trainings and opportunities to share with other mentors and youth in recreational programs throughout the year. The program offers financial support to youth in need of funding to maintain stability in their school environment. According to the charity, program goals include all youth in that participate to complete high school, 90% attend post secondary education, and 50% graduate from post secondary education. The Leadership Forum serves selected youth living in foster homes with an opportunity to engage in six monthly Saturday life skills training workshops consisting of a motivational speaker related to a learning experience/activity. Adult volunteer mentors work with the foster youth during the Saturday sessions and provide encouragement between sessions. According to the charity, the goals of the program include 100% of the youth completing the Forum gain the self-confidence to speak before the group, cooperate effectively in a team project, write a self-assessment, prepare a monthly budget, and express an understanding of the dangers of drug use and criminal behavior.
