Programs

Every Child Succeeds is an evidence-based, early prevention program that “ensures an optimal start for at-risk children in Greater Cincinnati.” Every Child Succeeds was established in 1999 by three local organizations — Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center, the United Way of Greater Cincinnati, and Cincinnati-Hamilton County Community Action Agency (Head Start). Working with nurses, social workers, and child development specialists from 16 local agencies, ECS provides home visits on a regular basis from the time of pregnancy until the child's third birthday. According to the organization, ECS has served more than 12,500 families through more than 250,000 home visits since its conception. Every Child Succeeds focuses on first-time mothers who are young, low-income, single, and/or receiving inadequate prenatal care. The program is voluntary, and services are provided free of charge. Home visitors offer parenting support and guidance, track the baby’s development, and offer health and nutrition education. Additionally, home visitors assess the home environment to ensure it is safe and stimulating and help mothers access prenatal care. According to the organization, the infant mortality rate among Every Child Succeeds program participants is 4.7 per 1,000 live births, less than one-third the rate in Hamilton County. In addition, according to the organization, more than 90% of all children in the program are developing normally in gross motor skills, fine motor skills, language development, and social/emotional development.

For the fiscal year ended June 30, 2008, Every Child Succeeds' program expenses were:
