Windy City Habitat for Humanity, Inc. is a nonprofit, ecumenical Christian housing ministry dedicated to eliminating poverty housing and homelessness in Chicago and throughout the world. Governed by a local volunteer board of directors, Windy City Habitat for Humanity is a part of an international ecumenical Christian movement dedicated to building and selling homes in partnership to low wage earning families. The affiliate is an independently run nonprofit organization that is responsible for coordinating all aspects of Habitat for Humanity home building, fund raising; building site selection; partner family selection and support; house construction, and mortgage servicing. In addition, the organization is focus on making decent shelter a matter of conscience and action. To accomplish these goals, invitations are extended to people of all backgrounds, races and religious to build houses together in partnership with families in need. Windy City Habitat for Humanity's mission is achieved through volunteer labor and donations of money and materials. Windy City Habitat for Humanity, Inc. builds simple, decent houses alongside our homeowners (partner) families. Windy City Habitat for Humanity, Inc. is a hand up not a hand out organization. In addition to a down payment and monthly mortgage payments, homeowners invest 350 hours of their own labor (sweat equity) into building their Habitat house and the houses of others. Windy City Habitat for Humanity houses are sold to partner families at no profit. The homeowners’ monthly mortgage payments are used to build more Habitat houses.
