Programs

              

Special Olympics Illinois (SO ILL) offers 150+ sanctioned competitions throughout the year in 19 different sports. These competition opportunities include local Spring Games, numerous District and State-level Tournaments, and our high profile State Games. We have also developed health and leadership programs designed to complement the core athletics component. These include: The Young Athletes Program: An all-inclusive, developmental play program for children, ages 2- to 7-years-old, with intellectual disabilities and their peers who are not intellectually disabled, preparing them for transition to full eligibility to participate at age 8. Athlete Leadership Programs: This program provides athletes the additional training and tools necessary to take on non-traditional roles such as program advocates, coaches, and SO ILL Board members. Motor Activities Training Program: MATP is for persons with severe limitations to participate in recreation training curriculum. Healthy Athletes: Special Olympics also offers free health screenings and health information at local, regional and State Games. This includes opportunities such as Opening Eyes (eye screening and securing prescription eyewear) and Healthy Hearing (hearing exams). MedFest: This is a single-day event, held at eight different locations around Illinois, during which 1,300 – 2,000 school-aged athletes receive a free sports physical (a requirement for competition) from local volunteer clinicians. Family Action Network: From financial planning sessions to nutrition information, as well as social gatherings, SO ILL has developed a network of support and resources to help families navigate the world of special needs.
