Evaluation Conclusions

Rainbows For all Children does not meet the following 2 Standards for Charity Accountability.

Standard 16: Annual Report - Have an annual report available to all, on request, that includes: (a) the organization's mission statement, (b) a summary of the past year's program service accomplishments, (c) a roster of the officers and members of the board of directors, (d) financial information that includes (i) total income in the past fiscal year, (ii) expenses in the same program, fund raising and administrative categories as in the financial statements, and (iii) ending net assets.

Rainbows For all Children does not meet this standard because the most recent annual report did not include:

  • Total income.
  • Total program expenses.
  • Total expenses for each program in the same categories that appear in the organization’s financial statements.
  • Total fund raising expenses.
  • Total administrative expenses.
  • Total end of year net assets.

Standard 17: Web Site Disclosures - Include on any charity websites that solicit contributions, the same information that is recommended for annual reports, as well as the mailing address of the charity and electronic access to its most recent IRS Form 990.

Rainbows For all Children does not meet this Standard because the organization's website, www.rainbows.org, does not include all of the recommended information for those charity websites that solicit for donations. Specifically, it does not include:

  • Total income.
  • Total program expenses.
  • Total fund raising expenses.
  • Total administrative expenses.
  • End of year net assets.
  • Electronic access to the organization’s most recent IRS Form 990.
In addition, the BBB of Chicago & Northern Illinois requested but did not receive complete information on the organization’s donor privacy and is unable to verify the organization's compliance with the following Standard for Charity Accountability: 18.
Rainbows For all Children meets the remaining 17 Standards for Charity Accountability.

Programs

In response to the needs that unresolved grief requires, Rainbows has designed age-appropriate curricula and programs for grieving children and youth ages 3-18, along with programs for parents to grieve and understand their child’s response following a divorce of remarriage. All curricula and programs are offered at public and private schools, social service agencies, hospitals and faith communities for no charge to participants. Rainbows is designed to be conducted by a trained facilitator in a child’s own community and with his or her own peers. Community sites recruit volunteers to host small-group grief peer-support programs. Each volunteer is then trained by Rainbows to lead 14 weekly peer-support meetings. Each peer-support group consists of 3-5 members that work on individual and group activities. All of these activities are designed to help participants cope with and resolve their grief. By providing all of this support in an accepting environment, participants develop positive life skills that will help them achieve future success. The curriculum is composed of seven programs in total: Sunbeams, Rainbows, Spectrum, Kaleidoscope, Prism, Silver Linings and Alumni Programs. Each age-level program is designed to be cognitively appropriate for kids, but all follow the same methodology for guiding kids through their loss. Although each program focuses on a different age group, the main topics and themes are the same throughout. Every participant completes a program that covers the topics of self, feelings, specific loss-event, anger and hurt, fears and worries, changes in families, trust, forgiveness, and, most importantly, coping tools.

For the fiscal year ended June 30, 2009, Rainbows For all Children's program expenses were:
