Programs

In 2011, at Rush, Stroger, and Children’s Memorial Hospitals, Snow City Arts engaged 1,065 students in 3,124 workshops for a total of 3,472 hours of instruction. The children we serve are primarily from the greater Chicago area, but the hospitals also serve the collar counties and neighboring states. Our student/patients are ethnically diverse: 50% African-American, 23% Latino, 21% Caucasian, and 6% Asian. Approximately 70% of the children are from low income/working poor families. All of the children we serve are considered disabled due to their hospitalization. Regardless of their background or illness, Snow City Arts’ goal is to provide these children with the educational resources they deserve. The majority of these children have had little or no exposure to quality cultural and arts education experiences, and so our impact on them is significant. The incredibly high quality interaction that takes place between our professional artists and the children they work with allows the young people to learn, heal, and grow intellectually and physically. While we are arts-based, we put the focus on learning and integrate state and national standards in Social Studies, Math, Science, Fine Arts, and Language Arts into both the student workshops and our evaluation systems. We include both the Illinois Department of Education learning standards, as well as national standards for arts education. By integrating these standards into lesson planning and assessment, Snow City Arts is able to ensure that the hospitalized children are learning skills that are in line with their regular school's classroom.
