Programs

Juvenile Welfare programs help to bridge the gap between home and school. These are designed to effectively help children acquire thinking and social skills that are critical to success both in and out of the classroom. Learning activities are practical, concrete and cost effective. Such a program is Teena & Tommy Tucker Pre-employment for children ages 9 through 12. This program can be motivational extrinsic reward program. It addresses real world needs. It emphasizes peer self-help, positive role models and the development of realistic goals ("straight talk"). These provide an alternative to street activities. A team of seven boys or seven girls, are given short work assignments, and attend a seminar and workshop over a five-week period. If they have participated well, they receive certificates for their participation. The learning sessions include such activities as Basics Academics, Communication Skills, Group Mentoring, Information Search, Job Activities if possible and Living a Healthy Lifestyle. Level II (middle school 7th and 8th grade): Productive Work Habits, Practical Problem Solving, Time Management as well as Social and Business Behavior, special topics. Creative, “hand-on” activities tie into classroom topics in math, science, history and the arts. Level III: This program is structured for ages for 11 – 12. This program is considered a psycho-educational activity). Then a new dimension has been added; psycho-educational activities for girls and boys ages. As an explanation; the children of same sex, sit in small groups of 6 or 7; they engage in a dialogue with the adult teacher/leader and their own peers concerning serious issues. A cap is passed around the group and each child writes his or her problem on paper and drops it into the cap. The identity of the child and his or her particular issue is unknown to the others. When discussed, this can serve as a reality check to all those present. This has led to some good results. Also children sit at a round table and are shown specific problems which are troubling to the child at school; such as bullying, teasing, peer conflicts, etc. and they can become detectives on how to solve these issues. There are five steps to the problem solving process. The children are very creative in their detective work in solving these sample issues, with the help of the counselor/teacher. During these programs all levels receive added perks are Tee Shirts, field trips and parties.
