Community Outreach Volunteers, NFP Summary of prior year’s activities Community Outreach Volunteers (COV) was started in October 2006 with ten south side high school students. COV provides after-school services to disadvantaged youth and opportunities for volunteers in Chicago’s Englewood community. Its mission is to help residents become self-sufficient by providing opportunities that develop their innate abilities and skills to overcome cultural, educational, financial, and social barriers. To realize this mission, COV operates three programs. The After-School Program operates four days a week during the school year for 50 children and youth ages 6-14. The program is comprised of two groups, one for girls (Girls of Destiny) and the other for boys (Beyond Your Borders). In delivering this service, COV partners with Bass Elementary School and the Chicago Park District (Hamilton and Sherman Parks), Teamwork Englewood NCP, Imagine Englewood If, and Global Outreach. Urban Fitness and Sports Program serves 100 children and youth. A total of 50 kids from the Bass School currently attend twice-weekly sessions from 3pm to 5 pm. Additionally, another 50 kids (different from the Bass School group) attend fitness and sports activities at two Chicago Park District facilities, Hamilton and Sherman, also twice a week for two hours. The program also engages the kids’ parents: each quarter we conduct presentations on healthy living and lifestyles at the Bass School and Hamilton Park. The Community Service Volunteers Program recruits, screens, and trains each year 40 volunteers who serve COV and other nonprofit organizations in Englewood. These volunteers empower young people in the Englewood community by assisting in their academic and social development through after- school tutoring, recreation, and life skills activities. Career Development Community Outreach volunteers, NFP through a number of partnerships is continuing to reach out to the youth and adults in the Englewood Community. COV provides community residents with the opportunity to explore a variety of career choices. Residents are equipped with the skills necessary to secure their choices of employment. The program equips residents with the skills that: Help them to transition successfully to post secondary training or a job after high-school, Help them achieve more by linking classroom study future choices, Help adult members acquire new skills and move through career transitions. Community Technology career Community Outreach Volunteers NFP joined forces with Hamilton Park under Chicago Park District to start a community technology Center. The center provides the following services to the community residents. Equip residents with the latest tools and software to make our community members proficient technology users. Community members gain basic computer skills, make digital movies, music and photography, and learn graphic design and web development. Community members are on the cutting edge of learning how to apply technology in their lives each day and learning how it will be an integral part of their futures.
