Programs

Volunteers of America Chesapeake was founded in 1896 in Maryland by social reformers Ballington and Maud Booth – son and daughter-in-law of The Salvation Army founders William and Catherine Booth – as a movement to “reach and uplift” the American people. Today, our mission is to inspire self-reliance, dignity and hope through health and human services. In 2010, with the involvement of more than 2,200 volunteers, we were able to impact directly the lives of 9,000 of our communities’ poorest and most vulnerable residents, including the homeless, families in need of affordable housing, the mentally ill, the intellectually disabled, individuals recovering from substance abuse and people transitioning from correctional programs.

For the fiscal year ended June 30, 2010, Volunteers of America Chesapeake's program expenses were:

Fostering Independence 10,611,881
Promoting Self Sufficiency 8,089,890
Encouraging Positive Development 124,134
