This business has a pattern of complaints and customer reviews expressing the following concerns:
•utility bills are excessive, 
•utilities are unfairly measured
•problems with the meters, 
•unsatisfactory customer service, and 
•billing issues/late fees

On January 14, 2016, BBB emailed the business requesting their voluntary cooperation in resolving the underlying cause for the complaints. On January 15, 2016, NEP responded saying: "That using your numbers our total customer interactions (reviews and complaints) have gone down from 32 to 30. That our company has grown significantly over the past two years so therefore the % of complaints against our base is significantly smaller. That we already employ most of the recommendations you list as actions you'd like to see. (They are) unclear as to where you see us imply that we are a utility".

On January 19, 2016, BBB met with a representative of NEP to further discuss the matter. On January 22, 2016, NEP responded and indicated the following: 
NEP is not a utility company
NEP residents will never pay more at NEP than they would with AEP, Columbus Public Utilities or any other regulated utility in their area.
NEP does not evict residents
NEP has hired a full-time Resident Advocate, to respond to every resident complaint within 24 hours to provide prompt information and attempt to resolve the concern directly.
NEP now provides rate information upon request.
NEP has removed fees for online payments, rolled out a new payment website and initiated mobile payments.
Bills now include informative graphics that express trends over time, average temperature, average daily usage and other information that helps families monitor consumption in the home. Additionally, we removed electricity billing fees and restructured our statements. Bills now include itemized details for community charges, fees and the local host utility rates we match. Residents can see exactly where each charge comes from and even reverse calculate our rates against the host utility at their convenience.
NEP will transition to an even more convenient bill format that allows us to offer level billing
NEP is hiring a firm to audit both our rates and meters.

BBB will continue to monitor activity and update the Business Review as needed.
