Complaint: Contractor, who represented himself as a professional, under bid the job materials by almost 50%. I was told that 25 sheets of drywall would be needed to complete the job. Was told the first day into the job that an additional 14 more sheets of drywall were needed. I know as a rule of thumb always add 10-20% for mistakes. This was much more than that. In addition to being completely off of the materials needed, Mr. Atkins told me the job would take no more than 3 days to complete. Its has been 13 days and the job is still not done. The job was to hang half a basement of drywall, mud and finish. i had completed half the basement myself. Many excuses were given. It seemed that other jobs he was involved with were more important. Was told that the drywall mud wasnt drying quick enough, yet things that didnt pertain to the mud were still left unfinished. IE: muding areas that were not muded, installing the drywall itself and little things that could have been finished while waiting for the mud to dry. Contractor was at the house a total of 7 times and was never on time. Even after explaining to him that i had places to be at specific times he and his crew still showed up atleast 30 minutes late every time. Understanding that drywall is messy, I was left to clean the floors that led to my basement every time that they left. They used my brooms and dustpans to clean the mess left in my basement, without ever asking, and left them all crusted with drywall mud which has made they useless, because with the caked on mud it just scratches my hardwood floors.
Desired Settlement: I would expect that a business that has received an A- rating from the BBB would be a top notch professional business.Atkins services LLC was not! I would expect to see the rating of this company to drop dramatically so others looking for contract work see his rating reflect the way he conducts his business.
We were contacted by Mr. ****** to do some drywall work in his home. We were told that it was just 10 sheets of drywall but then when I got to the house I found out that more was going to be needed. I gave an estimate that at least 25 sheets were going to be needed for the job, and gave him an estimate that included that.(See Attach ) Mr. ****** contacted me and wanted another price because he wanted to furnish the material. I lowered the price by $600.00 and he accepted. The job took longer because of the ventilation in his basement was not good and the drywall mud was not drying normal. He was made aware of this. We never used any of his things to clean up and I was never made aware of any brooms and dustpan. I was also not made aware of any scratches on the hardwood floors. Mr. ****** expresses his concern to me and he offered a settlement to me and I took that with no complaint and it was for a total of $800.00 for the whole job. So this matter was solved and I don't know why he contacted the BBB on this. I asked him what he wanted and he told us and we did it and gave him a paid in full invoice for the total. (See Attached Paid Involce)
Consumer Response: My reason on this reject is Mr. Atkins has not responded accurately to the previous complaint. In his response to my complaint he states that there were originally only 10 sheets of drywall and later needed a total of 25. If you look closely at his supplied documents it clear states that the job initially called for 25 sheet. After the initial hanging of those 25 sheets an additional 14 more were needed which is clearly stated on the final paid invoice.
In regards to the length of time the job took, Mr. Atkins and his crew left many days after only being there a few hours to go do other jobs. One of which he stated that he need to fix broken pipes on a jobs in a home he had just acquired a bid for. Mr Atkins stated that the mud he was applying for the final coat was a 20 minute dry mud. After a day the mud was dry, as I checked it myself. I had another contractor come in who was able to apply the drywall mud and it dried within 24 hrs. Their job was done in 3 days. A point of contact number can be provided to verify this fact. I never stated that scratches were made on my floors, only the claim that everyday they left my floors cover in drywall foot prints going from the basement door way to my front door. This may seem petty, but anytime I have had someone come into my home to do work they have always cleaned up after themselves. As to the broom, Mr. Atkins may not have been aware of my broom and dust pan being used. I don't deny that he wasn't aware, but he was not there all the time with the guys actually doing the job. At no time did I see his crew bringing in a broom or dustpan and when I went to use mine it was covered in drywall mud. I do have photo's to back all of my claims from the broom to the "finished product" by not only Atkins Services, but also the Finished product of the second company that completed the job.
BBB's Final Determination: After reviewing the position of all parties, BBB determined that the business made a reasonable effort to address the complaint. However the consumer remains dissatisfied.
