BBB recommends planning ahead at least 6-8 weeks before a move in order to have enough time to research and hire a reliable mover. To simplify the search for a trustworthy moving company, BBB offers the following steps: * Get Referrals. Ask friends or family to recommend moving companies that they like and check the BBB Business Review for each to ensure they have a positive reputation. * Take Inventory. Make a list of every item you will want the company to move and go over it with the mover to give them an adequate picture of what your move entails. * Compare Prices. BBB's Member Pages and Request a Quote services are designed to put consumers in touch with trustworthy BBB Accredited Businesses who can provide quick estimates on moving costs. In order to get the best price comparisons, be sure to provide each business with a list of your inventory. * Verify Insurance. Ask what type of insurance the moving company carries and how they plan to resolve things if there is any damage to your items. The minimum coverage required by federal law to cover moving liability for a consumer is $0.60 per pound per article and is usually included in an estimate. Also, consumers can typically purchase additional liability protection from their mover if needed. * Know Your Rights. Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) regulations require consumers to be provided with a copy of "Your Rights and Responsibilities When You Move" for all interstate (across state lines) moves. The pamphlet has instructions on what to do if belongings are damaged or lost during the move. Consumers who feel they are a victim of a moving scam should file a complaint with BBB. Additionally, contact the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles if the move was within the state of Texas and the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) if the move was across state lines.
