Illinois Attorney General Warning Residents of Email Scam

June 04, 2014

Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan is warning residents of an email scam that uses the name of her office.

Madigan said Tuesday the emails appear to come from her office and falsely threaten residents with prosecution for supposed debts. The emails include a letter with a seal that looks official and the words "final warning." However, Madigan says the emails are "an outright scam."

Anyone who has applied for loans online could be at a higher risk to receive the emails, Madigan said, because they've given their personal information to companies that could sell it to lenders or "illegal fraudsters."
