On Saturday, 9/11/2021 (Patriots Day), I received an invoice for $200.00 listing "hardware replacement"! I am offended by this bill, and your attempt to con us out of our money!
Let me outline your attempt at your deception to con $200 from us in exchange for a free estimate!
On 6/7/2021 I contacted your company with regards to visible damage to SOME shutter bolts on our second-floor windows. I had the parts and tools to do the work with plenty of instruction on YouTube to assist me. But I said over the phone I am a disabled veteran that broke my back in a military parachute accident which led to me being medically retired. and that is why I was seeking help because I could not safely do the work required from a ladder. And we also wanted to know what options were available to upgrade our current Shutter System.
Your company dispatched Brandan to assess the shutter bolt damages and we found him to be very pleasant, friendly, and confident that BSA could help. I reminded Branden that I was wanting to know what options were available to us for upgrading our shutter system. He informed us that he was an installer, but the sales manager would be coming soon. Branden also said that he would use my bolts to replace the damaged bolts that he found while we waited for the salesman to arrive. I told him that was not necessary, but he said it was no problem. I only had about 30 bolts.
When the sales representative arrived again a friendly and confident person. I walked him around our two-story home so he could take measurements. While walking around I pointed out the different types and styles of shutters were used throughout our neighborhood. He said he had a better system that would work much better.
As we sat down inside to quote me a price for new shutters, I pointed out that he failed to measure one of our windows which he did, once he confirmed his oversight. The final "Free Quote" he offered was for over $10,000. I confirmed that he measured 15 windows (3 are hurricane certified and would not need shutters) the front door side windows and our sliding door in the back.
I informed him that we are retired and need to make changes to our budget to afford that kind of expense, plus we were planning on having our front door replaced for easier access. So, it would be a while before we could even consider a new storm shutter system, and we also prefer to get at least three quotes to evaluate before we make any decisions. The sales rep became visibly upset; packed up his stuff and left, shortly after talking to Brandan.
I asked Brandan how many bolts were bad? He said he just started replacing all of them and was out of shutter bolts. I asked how many more were left to do he said 84 and BSA charges would be $4 per bolt ($336) for the additional bolts. I told him I can get a better price on the bolts from ****** (which is where I got the bolts he had been using). He said OK. Just call BSA when they come in and he would finish the work. I asked how much the work would cost me, he said only the office would know that, but it should be less than $500. We never observed Brandan actually replacing bolts; he did not return any bolts that were allegedly bad and replaced; and we saw only scant evidence of bolts being replaced. He was here for maybe an hour; not much more; so even if he used all 30 bolts; the invoice for $200 (received 3 months later!) is excessive.
Once the additional shutter bolts arrived, I called and emailed the BSA office multiple times asking for Brandan to return and for them to have Brandan return with a copy of licenses, insurance and workman comp protection. I want to honor the work done even if it was offered freely. And we must budget for all work. Proof of insurance protects us for accidental or someone purposely filing a false claim. The licenses are legal requirements that must be posted and must be file before any work is authorized. I received no phone call or emails.
One time I did get in contact with a lady who said she would leave my message for the manager! My last contact with your company was on 8/13/2021 at which time I again left a message that if I was not contacted by 8/17/2021 that I would have no dealings with BSA and would seek another company to help us replace our shutter bolts. I received no contact from your company by the cutoff date of 8/17/2021.
Therefore, I hired another company who used my bolts from ******. He found and repaired 20 failed bolts; not 84 and installed a transparent shutter plus other safety requirements need to protect our family. And the new front door had just been installed and they moved the bolts on the left and right side of the front door. Included they found some bolts that would not work (most likely because the cinderblock had cracked) so they put in an "F" track to secure the shutter, ordered us a Plexiglas shutter for the sliding door and two standard shutters for the front door all done in less than three hours for the whopping sum of $395!
Your company finally did return my phone call on 8/19/2021 (after 2 months of the original visit and several attempts to reach you) and in the voice mail you left your stated "you might have an opening sometime next week"! I did not return that call, nor did you try to call again. Through all of this con game of yours, you expect us to pay your company $200 for what is essentially a free estimate that we decided not to capitalize on? The invoice is not itemized, and we have no signed contract for the work that Brandan volunteered to do without providing any estimate.
We will waste no more time or effort with BSA but we will follow your golden rule "treat others the way you want to be treated". We will ignore you!
