June 26, 2014 - CALGARY, ALBERTA - Canada Day is a holiday when many newcomers take their citizenship oath and become Canadians. In celebration of the occasion, BBB and CCCSA are partnering to launch the Savvy Newcomers Consumer Education Program aimed at educating new Canadians on how to be savvy consumers.
"Getting information to new Canadians about how they can protect themselves is critical," says BBB President and CEO Sandra Crozier-McKee. "That's why we're so pleased to be working with the CCCSA on this important project."
BBB and CCCSA will be offering educational sessions in English, Cantonese and Mandarin on topics including scams that are targeting them, about how to check out a company's marketplace reputation and what kind of recourse they have if they've been taken advantage of and much more.
"Very often, Chinese newcomers don't want to make a fuss or speak up to ask questions or report something that has happened," says Lily Kwok, Executive Director of the CCCSA. "We think this partnership with BBB will help bridge that gap and give the Chinese community both information and a voice in the Calgary marketplace."
BBB plans to launch similar partnership with other cultural communities to ensure all newcomers are well informed and able to protect themselves from scammers, fraudsters and other nefarious characters.
Groups interested in having a Savvy Newcomers presentation for their group can contact David McKee at (403) 531-8688 or email email@example.com or Mavis Mei at (403) 265-8446.
