In November of 1992 the Better Buisness Bureau took a major step by establishing the Dispute Settlement Centre - BBB.

The Centre is designed to resolve matters by mediation or arbitration if they can not be resolved through standard Bureau procedures.

Mediation is the process whereby a trained neutral person sits down with the disputing parties and assists them to reach their own negotiated settlement. The mediator is chosen from a pool of highly qualified volunteers.

Arbitration is the process whereby a three person panel (or in some cases a single arbitrator) hears the case and makes a legally binding decision. The arbitrators are selected jointly by both parties, on the basis of specific skills or knowledge from a short list provided by the Centre.

Better Business Bureau members may choose to take an extra step to ensure their customer satisfaction by belonging to the Dispute Settlement Centre.
