Additional Notes

Complaint: We hired Robert Roofing & Gutters Inc to do our roof. From the day they started work on our house, the nightmare of cascading problems began. There was no respect for our property, as they trampled & killed plants in our yard, created enourmous gouges & marks in our 2-year-old deck, broke a garden hose from it's connection to the spout, tour off a gutter downspout from our house, left trash & ciagrette butts all over our yard. My wife attempted to approach the owner, & was brushed off & made to feel that her complaints were not valid. Then she noticed that they had placed ridge cap shingles on the roof that were a completely different color than the roof shingles that were already in place. My wife was insistant that they recitfy the situation. First the roofing crew tried to convince her that they were the same color (brown roof & grey ridge cap shingles), then the owner tried to convince her that the shingle company (***) did not make a matching ridge cap. It was only when we did our own research that the owner said that the supply company he received the shingles from must have made a mistake. We insisted that he made the shingles match on our now lifetime shingled roof. Two months later we found a hole the size of a watermelon as we were trying to place insulation in our crawl space. The hole in placed in the triangular position as the roof meets with the face of the house and the smaller roof that covers our front door. The hole is visible from the outside as well as the inside, but luckily no water was able to enter as it is concealed by shingles. We immediately called the owner & he came out the next day. The owner was, to say the least, not interested in fixing the hole. The owner, Robert, stated that because it was not leaking, it was not his mistake. He was verbally confrontational as I held my *-year old in my arms. This company advertises "MY GOAL IS TO PROVIDE TOP NOTCH WORKMANSHIP..I WANT EVERY CUSTOMER TO BE MORE THAN SATISFIED WITH THE WORK THEY ARE HAVING DONE"

Desired Settlement: I would like our wrongs righted, but I do not want that man or crew near my property again. I want a partial refund for the damages preformed to our property as well as the hole we are left to fix ourselves. I also want to give you this information because he is the type to take advantage of any situation he can, as he did with my wife. This is not a business that should have an award posted on his website from Angie's list. I hope that my complaint gets posted so that others may be warned.

Business Response: In Response to complaint # *******

Below you will find, point-by-point, my response to this complaint:

Deck:  When I arrived at the property for and estimate, the homeowner told me that the deck was two years old.  I responded by telling him that it looked older than that, since it had multiple gouges in the wood.  The homeowner responded by telling me that the gouges are from icicles (formed from the ice dams on the roof) which fell onto the deck causing the gouges.  Robert Roofing and Gutters, Inc. did NOT cause any damage to the deck.

Garden Hose:  The garden hose had a spliced plastic nipple attached to another garden hose.  A crew member did step on the plastic nipple and it broke.  My worker then told the homeowner’s wife that we would fix it.  The wife told my worker not to worry about it – that it’s only a piece of plastic.

Gutter Downspout:  The gutter downspout was taken down by us purposely as to not damage it while stripping the shingles off of the roof.  This is common practice in the roofing industry.   Upon job completion, we put the existing downspout back up.

Trash in Yard:  Typically when a roof is being replaced, it is almost impossible to keep any yard  completely clean from debris.  The yard was cleaned when the job was completed.  At this point, the homeowner says that his wife approached me to voice her concerns.  However, I was not even on the property at that time.   When I returned to the property, my worker filled me in on what transpired.  My worker told me that the wife approached HIM with her concerns.  I then approached the wife and asked her about her concerns.  She replied by telling me that everything was fine.  She was just tired because she had worked a long day the day before.

Ridge Cap Shingles:  I explained to the homeowner that the ridge cap shingles would NOT be the same color as the roof since he did not want to use the brand (***********) which supplies the color that would match the roof.  The homeowner insisted on using the brand ***, which does not have an exact matching cap.  This was explained thoroughly to the homeowner.  As a result of his decision, he was not happy with the color once the ridge cap went up.

Hole:  When the homeowner called to tell me about a hole in the roof (and used profanity),  I showed up the next day to assess the situation.  There was indeed a small hole (not even close to the size of a watermelon).  We did not notice the hole when re-shingling the roof because the hole was covered with metal.  The end of the fascia board was rotted and covered with trim coil metal.  I tried to explain this to the homeowner.  He clearly thought this is something we should have taken care of when re-shingling the roof.  I disagreed as the hole was not visible at the time.  I did, however, offer to take care of this issue at an additional charge.

Let me also state that the homeowner stated in his complaint that I was verbally confrontational while he held his *** year old in his arms.  This is impossible, since I was twelve feet up on a ladder almost the entire time.  When I did come down from the ladder to try and come to an agreement with the homeowner on how we can resolve the issue, he sarcastically asked me how long I’ve been in the roofing business.  I then got into my truck and left the property.

It was quite obvious that the homeowner did not want to hear ANY explanations – he only wanted the issue fixed at no expense to him.  It is my belief that because I did not agree to what the homeowner wanted, he has decided to file a complaint to get monies back from my company in order to pay someone else to do the job for him.  This is a bullying tactic as far as I’m concerned.  Robert Roofing and Gutters, Inc. takes pride in our workmanship and in satisfying each customer, and we are saddened that this customer is not satisfied with our work and that he felt it necessary to discredit Robert Roofing and Gutters’ name in this fashion.
