Hiring a Painter

No matter what type of project you are planning, it pays to look beyond the lowest bid when selecting a professional painting contractor. Before hiring, BBB offers the following advice to find a trustworthy painting contractor:

Do your homework.  BBB has Business Reviews on thousands of contractors (good and bad) across the US. You can also search through the Accredited Business Directory to find trustworthy contractors in your area. BBB Accredited contractors have pledged to uphold BBB’s Standards of Trust and are obligated to resolve any complaints from customers. You can also review any complaint history with the Attorney General’s Office.

Ask the experts.  Be sure the contractor is registered with the state. Get proof that the contractor has insurance that will cover the job. Ask if the contractor is a member of a professional association. Be sure that the contractor (not you!) applies for and obtains any permits that are needed.

Get references.  Ask the contractor for local references and find out if those customers were satisfied with the work done.

Insist on a written, detailed contract.  Home improvement contracts over $1,000 must be in writing, but it is a good idea to obtain a detailed contract no matter what size the job. Contracts should include the contractor’s registration number and contact information, as well as the start and completion dates, total to be paid and a list of specifications and materials.

Have a payment plan.  Pay no more than one-third of the total cost up front, unless special order materials are needed. Schedule payments on a percentage basis, based on the total amount of work to be performed, as the work progresses.
