Complaint: We are a small after school photography non-profit who works with under-served urban teenagers in *******. We used the 48HourPrint.com website to upload student photos and print over $700 worth of folded cards from black and white photos. The quality of printing was horrible, green in some and completely blown out in others. We contacted 48HourPrint to let them know that we were unsatisfied and ***** ***** gave us a series of excuses. He gave us several different answers for why the quality of the print job was so bad. ***** ***** asked me to send hard copies of each of the 5 folded cards back to him for further investigation, which I did. He did not investigate, nor did he ever respond to my phone calls, emails, and eventually a letter. I had my executive director call, and he would not take the call nor did he call back. We have asked to speak to a supervisor and none is ever available. No one will call us back when we leave messages. We were willing to work with 48HourPrint to reprint our folded cards. We cannot use any of the cards and want our money back so we can re-print the student work somewhere else.

Desired Settlement: Because the quality of work is so deplorable, we simply want our money back. The underprivileged teenagers we work with deserve better. Next time we will read reviews before doing any business.

Business Response: Hello,

We have conducted business with ***** ** ***** in the past with no concerns. We are sorry to hear that they were unsatisfied with the product they received as well as the service.

There is a reason why some of the black and white designs they had submitted did result in a green hue. The files which were submitted were submitted in a grayscale format and not the CMYK format in which we print. Grayscale obviously is formatted in black and white only, however we print in a four color spectrum CMYK (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, and Key Black). When we print black in CMYK it does consist of a mix of all 4 colors to get a true rich color black (the key black alone is more of a grey tone). So when we were given the grayscale formatted file it was converted to CMYK. We cannot predict what CMYK values will result in the conversion due to the variety of other file formats a customer may provide and each file type converts differently. In this particular case, the customers grayscale files converted with a higher balance of Cyan and Yellow producing that green hue. To ensure proper color we always recommend the customer submit the files in CMYK: http://www.48hourprint.com/preparing-files.html. From that same link we also recommend the customer use the US Sheetfed Coated V2 color profile, however the customer used a Dot Gain color profile. We cannot guarantee color reproduction for this reason if they are not CMYK and not in the recommended color profile.


However, we understand ***** ** ***** is trying to provide a beneficial service to a community in need and we can appreciate that. We apologize that they were unhappy with the service that they received. In this case, we would like to voluntarily offer a refund in the amount of $750.70 which we will do today 9/15/2011. If Youth In Focus would consider using 48 Hour Print again, we would be more than happy to have their files reviewed by our technical team before printing to assist they receive color reproduction they will be happy with.
