Complaint: Back in June 2011, we called TBros for an quote on how much it will cost us (labor and parts)to replace a cast iron tub with an acrylic tub and a new shower valve that we would supply in our newly demoed bathroom. According to the person (a lady) that I spoke with over the phone, "this kind of job gets charged hourly and it should not take more than 4-5 hours to complete". I asked further if we could get a job total estimate as opposed to an hourly rate, but was told that is the only way they can do it. Since we had used TBros before and we knew that they provide quality work, we asked them to proceed. When the plumber (*****) arrived at the house, he managed to demolish the cast iron tub in less than 30 minutes. At that point I had to leave for work, but my wife who was working from home on that day reported that the plumber was idling for about an hour an 1/2 supposedly waiting for someone to bring him parts. As the parts arrived, my wife was very surprise to notice that the new person was sitting around and was told that we have to pay for that additional idling worker and that according to the work order, they are to spend 8 hours on the job site just to install the Tub and shower valve with the drain that we supplied. In the mean time, my wife called the office and told them that we do not think it is fair for us to be paying for 2 people when clearly they were taking their time to ensure that they fill in 8 hours. at the end of the day, my wife was presented with a bill for close to $1000 which we paid on the spot, and then was told that she will receive another bill for parts which could not be disclosed to us at that time. When I got home, I noticed that the plumber had cut the ceiling below the tub open, and the trap that he installed was coming below the ceiling. To add insult to injury, TBros sent us a bill for close to $400 for parts while we provided them with the tub, shower valve and all associated drain parts for the tub. I immediately called TBros office and spoke with **** who sounded very surprised when he found out that we were charged by the hour as opposed to a set fee for the job. He promised me that he would look into the issue, but came back later on the following week only to inform me that he would send me a breakdown of the parts, completely dismissing the other issues that I brought up. When further pressed for expatiation, **** sent me an email, SHOUTING "**** HAD TO OPEN THE WALL BEHIND THE TUB TO GET AT THE BATH WASTE AND OVERFLOW – THERE IS NO OTHER WAY TO GET AT IT WITH OUT OPENING THE WALL" even though I sent him pictures of the drain coming below the ceiling and also another opening that the plumber made into our linen closet without asking us for permission to do so. Once again, TBros failed to address the billing issue.
Desired Settlement: As a customers we feel that we were not only deceived for making us believe that the job had to be done hourly, but we also felt that TBros cheated us and violated our trust by sending 2 workers on site to spend 8 hours to install an acrylic tub and a shower valve. Additionally, we do not think they should be allowed to conduct deceptive business practices as such and someone should step in and put a stop to this. We would like for TBros to waive the unreasonable parts and service charges of $400+ dollars they keep on sending us every month and are also demanding an apology for being misled and treated very poorly as customers.
Our apologies to Mr. ******* for not having met his expectations when it comes to the project aforementioned. There are a few things that should be clarified so that TBros' policies and procedures are clearer. Usually, when we install owner supplied product we do not come out and quote the work. We usually charge time and material for such work. Given that there was some demolition involved, it seems as if a site visit and quote would have been preferable in this case. As far as billing of the material after the work had been done, there are some instances when there is no-one available in our office to price up the material immediately. To avoid the plumber having to wait around for the pricing, we charge for the service and bill for the material - it is usually the customer's preference so that the plumber can leave. As far as the plumbers "filling in the 8 hours", we are far too busy for our plumbers to pad their jobs and our sincere apologies if it appeared that was the case. A resolution to this matter has been reached once we were able to connect with Mr. *******. We have agreed to reduce the amount owed and Mr. ******* has agreed to pay this reduced amount once a final inspection of the work has been done. We are co-ordinating that inspection with Mr. *******.
BBB's Final Determination: Business offered a resolution. Consumer did not pursue further with BBB and the matter was assumed to be resolved
