Additional Notes

Complaint: He said it would be $99.00 to clean my furnace and change filter. I have always called it a furnace and never had a problem hiring a serviceman. I had to pay him $99.00 just to change the filter and the gentleman did not even bleed the lines to the burner which is very, very important after changing the filter. He then drained the water lines to remove any air. He then wiped off the top of the furnace. I asked when he was going to clean out the furnace and he said he wasn't told to do this. I called ******* and he said I told him I had a furnace, and should have called it a boiler. He then wanted $99.00 more dollars to do that. I refused. I called another serviceman and he said he charges $99.00 for either a boiler or a furnace. This could cause a serious problem. I'm glad I watched him. I have never had this problem in 38 years lving here and calling it a furnace. I am elderly, disabled and very ill and feel like he ripped me off. Thank you ***** ******** *********

Business Response: On Tuesday 9/25 I received an online message through a service company that I subscribe to at 10:51am.  The message is a company where customers go on and place a service call for what they are looking for and it gets emailed to a few contractors who pay to subscribe. The message came in ***** ********, ******** RI. Change filter and clean Furnace. At first I didn’t call her back because I was busy. Later that evening she then contacted me directly. She introduced herself and I remembered her name from the email sent to my phone. She went on to explain that she has a Furnace that needs to be cleaned and have the filter changed. Thinking to myself a Furnace takes one hour to clean plus the cost of one filter. I told her the cost to clean her Furnace would be $99.00. She replied that she has had a guy do it for a while now and now he is too busy to service her unit and is looking for a new reliable company. I said that I would love to be her new company. So we set up a time to do the maintenance the following day. I gave my technician a few air filters and *****’s address and told him that he needs to perform maintenance on her Furnace. My technician arrived at the house and seen it was an oil fired Boiler. He went to the oil tank changed the oil filter, purged the oil line of air, purged the air out of the heating lines and wiped down the Boiler. When he told her he was finished she freaked out that he didn’t remove the top and clean in between the sections with a wire brush and vacuum it with a soot vac.  My technician then called me to let me know what was going on. I called ***** she said “I am very mad at you, you didn’t take the top off and brush the sections, you are trying to ***** old people!!” I replied “***** I am not trying to ***** anyone. When you called me you asked me how much it would be to change a filter and clean your FURNACE. I gave you a price based upon what you asked for. You have an oil BOILER and it is a completely different system. A proper maintenance on an oil Boiler takes much more time because you have to take the flue off, the cover, the top of the boiler, run brushes down each section and vacuum it out. To do it correctly takes like 2.5-3 hours. I told her that I was sorry for the confusion on her part and if she did want him to brush and vacuum it all down it will be an extra $99.00.” She got so mad at me and told me that I was trying to ***** the elderly. I tried to calm her down and said “if you call up mechanic shop and say how much is a tire and when you show up he has the tire but you meant exhaust how would that be his fault?” I tried over and over again to calm her down and explain to her the difference between a boiler and a furnace. She didn’t care because “she had been calling the **** thing a furnace for 38 years…” So we finally left it off that she was going to put a claim against me and she was calling her son. She hung up the phone. After becoming disconnected I thought to myself how I could make it right with her even though she was clearly wrong. I came to the conclusion that I would clean the exchanger out for an extra $49.00 instead of $99.00. I tried to call ***** 4 times but her line was busy. She paid my technician and he left.

Consumer Response:

I have reviewed the response submitted by the business and have determined that the response does not satisfy or resolve my issues and/or concerns in reference to complaint.

True, I called it a furnace and have been calling it a furnace for many years. I have talked to two other servicemen and they both said, They charge the same price for a boiler or a burner.  One of them advised me to get in touch with the Atty.General.  I also had to demand that the gentleman he sent was to purge the oil line after putting on a new filter as he was leaving and said he was finished.  It is very important to purge the oil line after putting on a new filter.  I am very glad I watched him.  But I had to demand that he do that.  I could have had serious problems later if he hadn't done that.  When he first started to open up the faucets to drain the water he said "Oh no!"  They are both broken!!!  I said, "What's broken?"  He never did answer me but just went on to drain the water lines. They were not broken.  Untrue that I called him first.  He called me back right after I submitted my info to NETWOR  He said he didn't have a pen on him and would call back later.  As far as him saying my line was busy, not true , but all he had to do was call his helper on his cell phone and offer to finish the job for $49.00.

As far as him saying my line was busy, not true but all he had to do was call his helper if he truly wanted to finish the job for $49.00.

Consumer Response:

I have reviewed the response submitted by the business and have determined that the response does not satisfy or resolve my issues and/or concerns in reference to complaint.

I see no response but I do have to respond again to his first message.  I see we all do make honest mistakes.  In his first response, he stated he gave his techician a few AIR filters to change the filter on my oil line.  They are not AIR filters, they are FUEL filters.  Like he said, "It's a big difference between a furnace and a boiler."  There's a big difference between an air filter and a fuel filter.

BBB's Final Determination: After reviewing the position of all parties, BBB determined that the business made a reasonable offer to resolve the complaint. However the consumer did not accept the offer.
