Additional Notes

Complaint: Windshield on my 2010 ****** ***** was replaced by Downeast Glass. The metal around the glass is now rusting all the way to the roof. I would like to be contacted on this matter. Down East Glass is telling me I must take it to have it repaired at a auto body shop owned by the same owner as Downeast Glass.

Desired Settlement: Downeast Glass pays to have my truck repaired at a auto body shop of my choosing.

Business Response: Regarding Mr. *****’s complaint, I offer the following:   Early in 2011, my company replaced the windshield in Mr. *****’s vehicle.  Last month, Mr. *****, brought his vehicle by my shop to point out a potential rust occurance on the roof.  ***** *****, our operations manager, asked Mr. ***** to obtain several quotes on repairing the damage from body shops of his choice.  In subsequent conversation between myself and ***** *****, I identified that in my 20 years experience, I have never seen a situation where rust would occur and asked ***** to take a closer look.  We asked Mr. ***** to take his vehicle to *****’s Auto body in ****** for inspection and to receive an estimate of repair.  Mr ***** is under the impression that these two business share the same owner.  This is inaccurate.  Our sole intent was to have this vehicle inspected by the firm in our region with the most expertise.  As it turns out, the rust was In fact related to the work we performed.  Mr ***** has taken the vehicle to a body shop of his choice and the repairs are complete at no cost to Mr. *****.  During this course of events, we kept very clear communication with Mr. ***** and had a positive resolution of this situation in mind.

Sincerely,
***** *******

Consumer Response:

I have reviewed the response submitted by the business and have determined that the response does not satisfy or resolve my issues and/or concerns in reference to complaintIn fall of 2011 I contacted Downeast Glass and had them
replace the front windshield on my white 2010 Nissan Titan crew cab truck. Two technicians arrived at my place of work to remove my cracked windshield and install a new windshield.  I talked with both the technicians and told them to make sure they took their time and did a good job; they both informed me that they would.

Soon after the windshield was installed by Downeast Glass I noticed rust forming around the rubber gasket of the windshield. I contacted Downeast Glass and spoke with *****, he told me to bring the truck to Downeast Glass and they would inspect the windshield. When I arrived at Downeast Glass ***** inspected the windshield and agreed with me that there was rust forming around the gasket.  The technicians had not made any attempt to prime the bare metal after they has scraped the paint away. ***** told me “they would make it right”, an appointment was made to have the rust repaired.

I drove back to Downeast Glass to have the rust repaired.  ***** informed me that he would attempt to have the rust repaired without removing the windshield, a short time after that I was informed that the windshield would need to be removed. ***** told me the windshield would be removed, the rust treated and sealed with a “special primer”. The truck was at Downeast Glass from 0800-1500; I waited almost the entire time at Downeast Glass. After the work was complete I drove home, on my way home I noticed that the dash of my truck was discolored and appeared to be melted in one spot. After a closer inspection I realized grey paint had been spilt all over the dash. In an attempt to clean it up a solvent had been used, this reacted with the plastic in the dash.

I contacted ***** and informed him of what I had found; he wanted me to bring the truck back to Downeast Glass so he could inspect the damage. I drove back to Downeast Glass; ***** agreed that there was damage to the plastic. ***** agreed to supply me with the plastic piece damaged on the dash, I would install it myself. I installed the plastic piece with no problems; there are still traces of grey paint on my dash to this day.

Winter of 2012 I noticed what appeared to be bubbles under the paint on the roof of my truck. After closer inspection I found that the entire top of the windshield behind the gasket had rusted and was spreading to my roof.  I once again called and talked to ***** at Downeast Glass, he once again instructed me to drive to Downeast Glass so he could inspect the rust. When I arrived ***** inspected the rust and took pictures, he told me I needed to get some quotes from auto body shops. ***** suggested that I get a quote from ******’s auto in Calais.  I received quotes from one auto body shop in ******* and one in *****.

I emailed the two quotes I received to *****; he then informed me that I would have to get a quote from ****** in ****** if I wanted to have the truck repaired. I questioned ***** as to why I had to get a quote from ******; he told me that the owner of *****’s was also part owner of Downeast Glass. I later discovered this was not true and ****** has no affiliation with Downeast Glass. I have no idea why ***** would lie about this. I drove to ****** and received the quote. All the auto body shops that I visited agreed that it was poor window installation that caused the rust. The ***** and ******* auto body shops both had estimated around $800, ****** in ****** estimated around $1000. It was only after the estimate from ****** that Downeast Glass agreed to have to truck repaired in *****.  It is my opinion that Downest Glass thought that ****** would be the cheapest repair shop, which is why they insisted that I go there.

The trip to Downeast Glass from my house is 50 miles round trip; I had to make this trip four times. I had to drive to ****** once for the quote from ******, 36 miles round trip. I had to miss work on five different occasions. I have had no truck for the past five days; my truck is still in the shop today. This could have been avoided 100% if the first windshield repair to my truck had been done correct.  I will close this dispute when my truck is repaired to my satisfaction.
