Complaint: Culligan advertises on TV that they test water free every Friday and Saturday I got mine tested and I believe they are running a scam to scare people into buying reverse osmosis kits for nearly $1000. They told me I had about double the arsenic level that the government allows. I told them I was getting my water retested somewhere else, and suddenly they wanted to retest because the first test that took about 3 weeks might have been wrong. Culligan got another sample from me and had the results back in just a few minutes, there was only a trace (normal)of arsenic. When Culligan did the first test they told me the testing takes about 2 weeks. The other test was done by ***** ***** I got their test results back and the arsenic levels in my water are normal (.001) ***** ***** was contacted and asked why they were doing a water test inside a home and after explaining were told that both the EPA and the DEQ are trying to force Culligan to shut down their free testing because they are not qualified to test water. All I got from Culligan was a sticky note with the test results wrote with a pen, and no identification of who tested the water, ***** ***** provided me with a computer printout. ***** ***** also told me they do not have any quick test to check arsenic levels.
Desired Settlement: I want Culligan to be forced to use qualified labs to test water, if they want to continue with the free testing or to quit offering free testing without notification that they are not qualified to test water. I also think they should have to pay for qualified retesting for every home the sold a reverse osmosis kit to and be forced pay back everyone they did trick into buying a reverse osmosis kit.
Regarding complaint# *******
Culligan Has recently advertised for a free water clinic where customers can bring in water samples to be tested for several contaminates to include (but not limited to) Arsenic, Nitrates, Nitrites, ect. The add campane was designed as a community service to bring awareness to people about what is, or is not in their drinking water. In the advertising, it clearly states that “Contaminates may not be in your water”. We also do not claim to be a state certified laboratory, and therefore cannot provide a complete “print out” of the results. However, the testing supplies that were used to test for all contaminates are actual Lab testing products from **** *******. The Arsenic test kit we use is **** Cat. No. 2800000. This test is followed precisely by the provided instructions. The results take about 40 minutes to produce, and as we had an overwhelming response, it took some time to respond to all of the people that brought in samples. Throughout our testing as we come across a water sample that is reading above the Maximum Contaminate Level of a potentially harmful substance, we offer to retest another sample, and suggest that a state certified lab test their water. In the event that high levels are confirmed, we offer a solution to remove said contaminate. All of our solutions are state of the art, certified, and regularly required by the DEQ, and EPA on water supplies that are considered by the Federal Government to be unsafe. Many home lenders require Culligan equipment to be installed in homes that have unsafe water supplies before they will lend money on the home. The FREE water analysis is just that, FREE. There is no obligation to anyone that participated in the free water clinic, just as the ads clearly state. Culligan has been in business for over 76 years, and has a reputation of real products that do what we say they will. We are here to stand behind our products and our customers, not sell snake oil and fly by night. There are no tricks being performed at Culligan, our customers want to better their living, we educate them and they decide what, if any of our solutions is best for them. We will continue to offer this free testing as a service to those who like it and want to be aware of their health.
BBB's Final Determination: Business offered a resolution. Consumer did not pursue further with BBB and the matter was assumed to be resolved
