weight loss “Losing Weight Is Easy”...NOT!Aren’t you tired of hearing about how easy it is to lose weight?  So am I!  Don’t we all want to believe in the hype about products marketed as weight loss fixes?  There are so many products on the market today. Which advertisers should we believe?

Consumers who want or need to lose weight can be vulnerable. Everyone wants to look and feel better. Some of the advertisements are so compelling, it’s hard not to believe what they’re saying, right? Here’s what we can do as consumers to get informed.

Hopefully, after reading this information, you’ll have the necessary tools to spot the “fibbers.”

As part of our original mission, BBB locations, including here in Dallas, challenge companies for advertising that may be untrue, misleading, or deceptive. Remember the old saying, “The proof is in the pudding?”  It couldn’t be truer.  The BBB Code of Advertising says that businesses should possess substantiation before making advertising claims.

Prior to making a purchase for a weight loss fix, search for the business on bbb.org.  The BBB Business Review is an unbiased summary of the company’s business practices.  Ratings are issued like school grades, “A+” to “F.” BBB Ratings are based on a number of factors, including customer complaints, if any, and whether a challenge by BBB concerning advertising claims is unresolved.

The Federal Trade Commission also has a really cool, interactive tool (Weight Loss Challenge Game) to help you tell fact from fiction when it comes to weight loss products.  Play the game and see how well you do.

Lastly, common advertising pitches used by “fibbers” include:

  • Lose weight without dieting or exercise
  • Lose 20 pounds in 7 days
  • Target trouble spots such as tummy or thighs
  • Never diet again, lose weight permanently
  • All “natural” ingredients, safe for everyone
