What Do You Mean I Owe Taxes?

Tax season may be over but BBB® and the Ohio Attorney General is warning of a tax scam costing some Ohioans from $700 to $28,000. Con artists are calling consumers pretending to be IRS agents stating there’s a problem with the consumer’s taxes, making threats about the need to pay back taxes and then demanding immediate payment.

In another scenario, the caller still claiming to be from the IRS, says the consumer is under investigation for tax fraud tells them to send money using a prepaid card to correct the issue. Once the money is sent it is nearly impossible to recover the funds.

The phone number on the consumer’s caller ID may have a 202 area code indicating it’s from Washington, D.C. But the number likely is “spoofed.” Don’t fall for this scam and be wary of callers making these claims. Start with trust. Visit bbb.org
