It’s summer time! — The season to spend more time outdoors in the warmth and all its glory! It’s also time to fire up the grills. Remember, Father’s Day is right around the corner, but even without that special holiday, there’s no need to have an excuse to crank up the outdoor fire!
Also this time of year, garden fresh veggies are cherished. Even if you don’t grow your own, just go to a Farmer’s Market. Be careful what you buy though because not all farmers markets are created equal.
Looking for organic produce? You’d better ask the seller if the harvest is USDA certified. Otherwise, who knows what kind of chemicals might be used in killing pests. For more information about what is considered organic, visit the USDA’s website.
Want to buy local produce? Make sure you are shopping at a “producer-only” market. Otherwise, the products may come from out of state or even out of the country. This is NOT the way we want to support our local community!
As far as selling prices, you’ll want to have an idea of what the market value is for certain products. Otherwise, you could be charged a premium! It’s always good to do your homework.
Also if you find that a farmer’s market isn’t being completely honest about their products — For instance, they are saying that they are organic or local, when they are not. — contact your local BBB. This is something we need to address with them to protect the public’s interest at large.
Now that it’s summer, take time to enjoy the great outdoors! Crank that grill up and enjoy fresh, local produce! We’ll be enjoying it, right along with you! And a Happy (early) Father’s Day to you awesome dads out there! Enjoy it!
